Overview

Facing health challenges while confined to bed demands not only bravery but also creativity. Probiotic enemas represent a self-care technique that can enhance one's sense of empowerment and well-being, especially in maintaining gut health. This guide aims to facilitate the administration of a probiotic enema in a way that is stress-free and maximally comfortable. It is important for anyone unable to perform the enema and subsequent cleanup on their own to seek assistance.

Why Probiotic Enemas?

For individuals confined to bed, probiotic enemas can be a significant source of comfort, offering a straightforward method to improve gut flora. The benefits may be akin to those of Fecal Microbiota Transplantation (FMT).

Preparing for the Procedure

1. Preparing the Probiotic Solution:

Select a probiotic formulation designed for enema use. Dissolve the probiotics in 50 to 100 ml of filtered, boiled, and then cooled water. Allow the water to cool to a temperature that is comfortable for the body before adding the probiotics, as high temperatures can destroy them.

2. Assembling Your Materials:

You will need:

  • A small enema kit. Choose any style that works best for you. I use a squeeze bottle.

  • Sterile gloves (to ensure sterile handling)

  • A towel or a puppy pad for spill protection

  • Tissues or paper towels for any spills

  • Virgin coconut oil* or another lubricant of your choice (*I have no affiliation/receive no compensation from this coconut oil brand)

3. Organizing Your Space:

Arrange your space to prioritize comfort and cleanliness. Ensure all materials are sterilized and easily accessible before starting. You can play music to help you relax, or turn on the tv, if you are well enough to tolerate media/visuals. Have anything you need to remain comfortable nearby, be it your phone, tissues, water, massage gun, heating pad, etc.

4. Bathroom Visit BEFORE Administration

Ensure you have a bowel movement before the enema to retain the solution for the recommended 15 minutes. If you usually have multiple bowel movements in the morning, perform the enema after the last one.

Step-by-Step Administration

1. Positioning:

Lie on your side with knees slightly bent, using a pillow for extra support if needed. Elevating your feet with a pillow can also be helpful.

2. Insertion and Application:

Lubricate the enema tip and insert it gently and slowly into the rectum. Relax your sphincter muscles during insertion. Once in place, gradually squeeze the enema bulb to release the probiotic solution. PRO TIP: Make sure that the enema tip you are inserting is connected tightly to any tubing/kit to ensure it does not come off and get lost inside your read end. Once things to inside the rear, they are notoriously difficult to get back out.

3. Resting and Relaxing:

Stay relaxed after administering the enema. If you feel an urgent need to evacuate, try to remain calm; this feeling usually passes. Gently shifting from one side to the other can help distribute the solution internally. Aim to hold the solution for a total of 15 minutes. If you are unable to hold the enema for the allotted time, do not worry. You can try again tomorrow. The body learns to adjust as you practice the technique.

4. Using the Toilet:

When ready, move to the toilet to let any remaining liquid exit your body cleanly. If you cannot leave the bed, use paper towels and the protective pad to manage any fluids, and clean yourself thoroughly afterwards.

Troubleshooting Tips

  • Managing Spills: With a small volume of liquid, spills should be minimal. The protective pad will catch drips, and any towels used can be washed easily.

  • Minimizing Discomfort: Using a smaller amount of fluid can reduce the urge to evacuate prematurely, making the process more comfortable.

  • Keeping Everything Sterile: After use, rinse all materials with hydrogen peroxide and soapy water. Clean the insertion tube thoroughly and let it dry before storage.

Conclusion

For those confined to bed, adopting proactive measures like probiotic enemas can provide a sense of agency and comfort. Remember, gentleness is crucial – from the solution volume to the administration method, each aspect plays a role in ensuring a calm and positive experience.
